Who is Mrs. Wallstrom

Osa

I am a high school teacher at Rutland High School in Rutland, Vermont. I am married to my inspiring husband (Dave). We have a feisty mutt (Izzy) who loves to run in the woods and monitor squirrel activity in our back yard. Our cat (Osa) spends the majority of her time testing out the best napping spots.  I assume the captions under the pictures are unnecessary, but you never know.  I often consider the decisions and experiences that have led me to this exact place and time in my life.  As a kid, when asked what are you going to be when you grow up, I never would have said a teacher and Dave (a vermont native) would never have said living in Rutland.  And yet here we are enjoying life together as a teacher and a nurse in the heart of Rutland City.

I grew up in Belgrade, Maine and wanted desperately to go some place new - some place different. One of the best decisions I made was attending Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota where I majored in geology.  After graduating,  I spent the next five years working seasonally as a wilderness ranger, park service employee, ski instructor, waitress, and ski patroler.  These years of transient work provided me with many opportunities to travel, play, and meet many different people.  They also made my mother crazy and me realize that my heart is truly in New England.  When I finally got around to "growing up" and getting a "real job", much to my surprise I realized I really wanted to go into the field of education.

Once I decided to go back to school to get my masters in education, our friend Rebecca (who was an Earth Science teacher at Rutland High School) recommended Castleton State College.  Just as I was finishing my degree at CSC, Rebecca decided to leave teaching and go back to school for counseling. The next year I found myself teaching in the same room that had previously been hers.  I feel very fortunate in the opportunities and experiences I have had and look forward to new adventures in the future.
